Think Hammond!

And yes, I confess that Hammond, IN is arguably not a suburb of Chicago.
Grace Chemical

This will make your eyes burn and water. It will make your head throb. It is a bad scene. And it looks nothing like the sparkling, pristine chemical containers featured on the Grace Chemical website.

Marktown, East Chicago is worth a visit. Only a few blocks remain of this planned community for steel workers, and it is surrounded on every side by steel mill. It could be Pullman-esque if more people actually wanted to live there, but otherwise there’s nothing else quite like it around these parts.
And I will confess that East Chicago is arguably not a suburb of Chicago.

Lord, I love that “Polish, Fried Mushrooms” sign. I’d like to have that sign hanging on my wall.
Unknown Loop Diner
Lou Mitchell’s

A classic way to launch your walk if you’re leaving from Union Station, or to start your business day if that’s how your coming in. You get an orange slice, a prune, and a halloween-size box of Milk Duds w/your breakfast, and you can’t argue with that.
Party House

6112 W Diversey Ave.
It was there in 2004, but I don’t think it’s there today.
